<< A day in the life >>

I've actually had a few tasks to complete at work these last couple of days. These tasks are mindless in the extreme, but they make me feel like less of a waste of oxygen.

Yesterday, for example, I proofread a copy of that text that you scroll through when you're downloading a computer game or something, in order to get to the part where it says "I Agree," which you click on to get the game. It's the least-read text in the universe, and I've read it.

My main duty, of course, is phone-answering. Mostly the phone does not ring, but when it does, here is an approximate break-down of the incoming calls:

60%: Wrong numbers and hang-ups.

This is because apparently a year or so ago, a lot of old business numbers were transferred to this one, so if you call them, you get me. Why? I have no clue, but the upshot is that about 15-20 people a day call here and want either the Washington Funeral Association or some doctor's office. The doctor's office people are especially hard to get rid of, as they are not easily deterred from enumerating all of their aches and pains in excruciating detail.

20%: Auto glass repair shops.

"Hello, this is Stacey with Triple-A Auto Glass! We are running a special and would like to know if you, or someone you know, has a cracked or chipped . . . "

10%: One secretary's 13-year-old son.

Usually, he's seen some merchandise in the local mall and wants to know if Mom will buy it for him.

10%: Actual clients calling with legal needs.
